Bead making with papier mache
SHIVA Charity, promoting education in Nepal and Sri Lanka
Tear newspaper into small strips (the smaller the better). Use a bowl or casserole dish.
Pour boiling water to just cover the paper.
Leave overnight, maybe boil and stir again, and drain, squeezing out the water to make a clay-like texture.
Roll gently into small balls, using the palms of your hands. Allow to dry overnight before piercing a hole with a cocktail stick, or drill with a mini drill when completely dry.
Paint the beads to your design, using acrylic paints, or any other paints, and string up to dry. Varnish with any art shop varnish or industrial indoor/ outdoor clear varnish and wait to dry.
SHIVA Charity (UK) puts these free educational pages on its web site in order to be used primarily in Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Darjeeling, India, where lessons are mostly repetitive "chalk and talk" and curriculum restrained. We are involved in teachers' resources training there, and hope that schools in the UK and elsewhere will support SHIVA Charity's cause with funding. Please visit our main pages to see the work we do, and how we raise money for individual projects and for child sponsorship.
