APPEAL SL1: POVERTY IN SRI LANKA. A SIMPLE HOME CAN BE BUILT FOR JUST £800. CAN YOU OR YOUR ORGANISATION AFFORD TO GIVE SOMEONE A PLACE TO LIVE?

You don't have to stray far from the tourist areas of Sri Lanka to see people living in appalling conditions of poverty. Here, just off the beaten track near Negombo are two examples of the hopelessness many are facing.

Elizabeth says "The tsunami was a terrible disaster, and I am glad all those people were helped so much, but we have always been poor and without a good place to live. Please remember us as well."

SHIVA Charity has built many nursery schools to replace those destroyed by the tsunami, and now we would like to use our experience and expertise to give a better life to the poorest in the Sri Lankan community.

A cabin like the one in the plan below gives shelter, security and comfort at a minimal cost. It combines the stability of a concrete floor and breeze block base, with a palm leaf woven half-wall and thatched roof.

£800 will give a new home to Madakka (above), who is 78 years old and lives alone, or to Elizabeth and her son Dileep, (right). They have no future and no hope without your help!
