SHIVA Charity workers recently completed a building project, renovating The Nuffied School for the Deaf and Blind in Jaffna (north Sri Lanka). The project was funded by True Volunteer Foundation (based in London). It surprised us that the buildings are set in acres of land that is largely unkempt and barren. We proposed to the school administrators that at least one acre of this land should be cleared and made fertile, and that vegetables should be grown there.
This is an arrid region so that proper water supply and irrigation channels would also have to be provided. A well and pumping system would be required, and the vegetables be tended to daily. The project would in our estimation cost £15000, and this would include a tool shed and tools, water supply, clearing land, buying seed and initial labour costs. Once established, the project would be self sustaining, giving food to the school, and selling any extra produce.
At Nuffield, so many children leave without qualifications, and without any prospects of a job. This project would require some school leavers to be trained in farming and give them employment.
The acre of land would require that we rotate crops, and we have had some expert advice from nearby famers, who have also promised to help, should this project go ahead. SHIVA Charity believes that the proposed "vegetable farm" would be a very useful addition to Nuffield School for the Deaf and Blind.
