SIMILES AND ADVERBS

Similes are words that compare one thing with another.
For instance 'Her eyes were as green as emeralds'
is a simile comparing eye colour, and sparkle, and emeralds.

Another way of putting it is 'Her eyes were like emeralds'.

Example...... Think of some similes for

a) A tall man

b) A spiky tree

a) The man was as tall as a lamp post.

b) The tree had spikes like a hedgehog.

Think of some interesting similes for the following:

c) A girl's untidy hair.

d) An old man's wrinkled skin.

e) A teacher's loud voice.

f) A fierce dog.

g) A witch's nose.

h) A clown's walk.

Now read this story and underline all the adverbs (describing the verb, and usually ending in "ly"), and put a circle around all the similes. Make a list of these adverbs and similes neatly in your folder.

The sky was as black as soot as I stumbled awkwardly towards the tent. Like an
idiot I had stupidly forgotten my torch. Only the moon, like a silver coin,
glowed occasionally from behind the thick cloud. I felt the cold wind viciously pinching my cheeks, and I was as cold as ice when I finally arrived at the tent.

"Where have you been?" said Roger worriedly. "You left hours ago, and you told me you were only popping out quickly!"

"I got lost" I said guiltily, knowing that I had lied like a criminal.

"I don't believe you" Roger said suspiciously "You look as white as a sheet. Tell me the truth!"

I slowly began to tell him about the winding tunnel and how I had fallen
like a stone into its muddy opening. He listened carefully as I described the green lizard - like figures who lived there, hidden away from us humans.
